Set Up: Miracle Beauregard is a female bounty hunter disguised as a male and known by the name Beau. Since she shed her male disguise and seduced Deacon at the Pleasure Dome, she’s doing her best to avoid him and he’s doing his best to stick to her like a leech.

“I decided to hold back from coming into your camp for the night until you’d made a fire and put the coffee on. Catch. I brought supper for you to cook.”

“Maybe I don’t want company,” Miri muttered, catching the jack he tossed.

“Get used to it. Until we find the counterfeiter’s plates, we’re partnering.”

Deacon delivered his astonishing opinion and rode past Miri toward her camp, leaving her standing in the dark holding a dead rabbit.

Here’s the blurb:

Since both his partners have married and retired from the hunt, Deacon McCallister is alone when he visits the Pleasure Dome, an infamous brothel in Fort Worth’s Hell’s Half Acre. He’s tracking a counterfeiter but what he finds is TROUBLE—dressed in a man’s ruffled shirt and nothing more.

Bounty hunter Miracle Beauregard pretends to be male, calls herself Beau and for years has fooled the general public concerning her gender. But underneath Miri’s disguise, beats a feminine heart in lust for Deacon McCallister. Though she spends a lot of time dreaming about her rival, she never expects to act upon her longings.

When Miri follows an outlaw to the fanciest whorehouse in Texas and crosses paths with her heart’s desire, she trades her buckskins for bare skin to play the part of Deacon’s paid companion.

Inside Scoop: Miri figures wrong when she thinks one taste of Deacon will be enough and quickly discovers her undercover lover has forever on his mind.

Hi everyone! Cara Bristol’s here today talking about lost opportunities and cosmic fixes. Having already read her newest book, Destiny’s Chance (it’s great) I’m interested in Cara’s inspiration.

Reincarnation

By Cara Bristol

Reincarnation, also called transmigration or metempsychosis, involves the transfer of the soul or spirit from one body to another.

In Western culture, we sometimes hear of reincarnation from celebrities who claim to remember past lives of glory or in the movies themselves, in which two individual swap bodies with slapstick results.

Some people believe in reincarnation, although most don’t – in the West. But in the East, among followers of Asian religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, it’s taken seriously. The specific beliefs around reincarnation are very complex, and vary from one Asian religion to the next.

But a commonality is the tie to karma, an action or deed that has a cause an effect that must be settled, if not in this life, then the next. Persons can move up or down the status ladder depending on whether they have incurred good karma or bad. Past wrongs must be righted before the person and move on (or upward). A person is not always reincarnated as a human – he or she can be reborn as an animal or plant or as higher ranking being (a god for instance).

But even if one moves up the ladder, the goal is to free oneself from the repetitive cycle of death and rebirth.

Although reincarnation is primarily an Eastern belief, it did have some followers in the West. The ancient Greeks who followed Orphism believed that one’s divine soul was imprisoned by the body and underwent reincarnations to free itself. The early Christian mystic sect, the Gnostics, believed in reincarnation.

For most Western people, however, reincarnation is merely an interesting concept.

I’ve been intrigued by reincarnation since I saw the movie, The Reincarnation of Peter Proud by Max Ehrich in which a man had disturbing dreams of a murder that occurred decades ago before he was born. It turned out it was his murder. Another reincarnation story I particularly enjoyed was This Body, a novel by Laurel Doud, in which a middle-aged wife and mother of two dies of a heart attack and wakes up a year later in the body of 22-year-old drug addict.

My reincarnation novel, Destiny’s Chance, was inspired by a question: what if your soul mate was romantically involved with someone else but you had the opportunity to trade places with that individual only to find out that the one you loved had loved you all along? And now you’re seemingly a different person. Would the essence of who you are carry over? Would he recognize you?

It was a tricky story to write because I wanted to ensure that no physical or emotional infidelity occurred and that all the characters were likeable and sympathetic.

Blurb:

Destiny Grable can’t help that she’s fallen in with love Chance Everett, her best friend’s boyfriend, but she’s never, ever acted on her feelings — until she and Zoe are in a car accident, her friend is killed, and she is reincarnated in her body. She never wished for something like this to happen, but perhaps now she’ll be free to love Chance the way she always wanted to.

Chance might have had pursued Destiny, but he has a kinky side and she was a nice girl. But now she’s dead, and the accident has forced him to take in his ex-girlfriend. As soon as she recovers and moves out, he’ll get on with his life.

Can two star-crossed lovers ever find happiness?

The story opens with Destiny’s awakening in the hospital to find Chance at her bedside. He informs her “her friend” Zoe (his ex-girlfriend) has been killed. She takes the news hard, but Destiny doesn’t know the worst of it. This is the scene when she finds out what really happened…

Destiny’s Chance Excerpt:

Destiny huddled under the thin hospital blanket, worry and confusion knotting her stomach. She sounded hoarse, like she had a cold, but her parents should have recognized her anyway. They hadn’t given her an opportunity to explain. Why had her mother screamed like that? What was going on? After her father slammed the phone in her ear, she called the house again and their mobiles, but no one answered. Why hadn’t the sheriff’s department or the hospital contacted them? Chance had been notified about Zoe.

She wished she could bounce her worries off her sister, but she was vacationing in the Caribbean. Besides getting insight on what was going on with her parents, she needed Laura’s assessment of the weirdness of the accident. She recalled the car flying through the air, the door popping open, and then…then she’d had one of those out-of-body experiences she’d read about, a mental disassociation in which she’d seen her body tumble out of the vehicle. She wiggled, the small motion stirring a large ache, evidence that, unlike her out-of-body hallucination, the bone-jarring impact of the car smashing into the rocky canyon bottom was real.

She stretched her legs and curled her toes. Muscles protested, but the pain reassured her she was alive. The drugs the hospital must have given her caused her body to feel strange. Light-headed she could understand, but light-bodied?

Destiny expelled her breath in a heavy sigh and reached for the phone to try her parents one more time.

What the hell? She’d been too wrought by news of Zoe’s death to pay attention to much else, but now she noticed her arm looked…weird. Her wrist seemed thinner, her skin paler, the hair so fine it appeared almost nonexistent. And when had she gotten acrylic nails?

Her pulse rate doubled. The arm, the hand, the silver infinity ring on the index finger weren’t hers, but she recognized them. She fixated on the ID bracelet encircling the skinny wrist. RICHARDS, ZOE. And her friend’s date of birth.

They got the bodies mixed up. Gave you the wrong wristband.

But they couldn’t have switched arms. She flipped her hands over.

Destiny ripped back the covers and swore in frustration when the bed rail fought her frantic efforts to lower it. She forced it down, but her hospital gown caught in the metal. She tore it loose and scrambled for the bathroom.

Bruised and battered, Zoe stared at her from the mirror over the sink.

A nightmare. Wake up! Wake up! “No! No!” Slapping her face, Destiny searched for her plump cheeks, her ski-jump schnoz, and the mocha-brown eyes she considered one of her best features. The image mimicked her movements but presented high cheekbones loved by the camera, a perfect nose, and large blue eyes gone feral.

She yanked up her hospital gown. Where were her hips? Her boobs! She stared at her flat chest. She dropped the gown and screamed.

A nurse charged into the bathroom. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”

“My face!” she yelled. “What happened to my face?”

“The bruises will heal, and your hair will grow back and cover the scar.”

“No, no! It’s not my face!”

“What do you mean?”

“The person I see isn’t me,” she cried.

Today I’m sharing a snippet from my upcoming title, Trouble In Disguise. It’s the fifth book in my Eclipse Heat series and the third McCallister bounty hunter to get his story. Trouble In Disguise releases from Ellora’s Cave Publishing on June 5.
***

Set Up: Miracle Beauregard is a female bounty hunter disguised as a male and known by the name Beau. She has a lusty interest in Deacon McCallister but nothing gets in the way of practical matters like catching a counterfeiter and collecting the reward before Deacon can prevail.

***

Miri figured it was time to find out who was following her. She camped for the night, built a small fire and made a show of grooming her horse, Possum, before fading into the surrounding shadows. She and the big wolf guiding her, were squirming on their bellies on the ground using the twilight and half darkness for cover when her quarry struck a lucifer and lit his cigar.

“Lose something?” Deacon drawled.

Miri felt like a fool. Ketchum growled at the same time his tail thumped. Evidently her wolf couldn’t decide whether to bite Deacon McCallister or lick him. Miri had the same problem.

Here’s the blurb:

Hi everyone. Glad to be back! *waving* I’m posting today from my current wip, the second book in my Unlikely Gentlemen Series. I also received my cover this week so I’m sharing it with the opening lines from Outrageous Pride.

Sunday Snippet:

“That nincompoop is just daring Matthew to brawl with him,” Tali Fitzwilliam muttered. Shaking her head in disgust, she pointed out the store window at the cocky Irishman named Kell Lonigan, standing in the middle of Isaca’s only street.

“If Matt’s got any sense, he’ll stay on his horse and keep riding.” Beth Harper, the town’s post mistress and one of Tali’s best friends, joined her to gawk at the picture of two adult men squaring off to fight, though one was on horseback and the other on his feet.

The male hijinks commanded special interest since the man with the bulging muscles, wearing a taunting grin was Isaca’s newest property owner; the mounted rider, Matthew Bodine, was Tali’s beau.

Blurb:

Natalia Fitzwilliam doesn’t know she’s the love child of a Texas rancher until he dies. Her father’s legitimate heirs want the land and money he’s willed her, and to get it, they attack her reputation with vengeance. Her only options are to give up what is rightfully hers or marry to gain protection.

As the drought around Isaca takes its toll, Irish immigrant and bare-knuckle boxer, Kell “Pride” Lonigan is building an empire by buying up land before it goes to auction. He sees opportunity in Miss Fitzwilliam’s dilemma. She’s refined, beautiful, and chaste; three things a rough brawler can only dream of when he takes a wife.

Though she barely knows the Irishman who’s come to town, desperation has Tali considering the former boxer’s proposal. Before she can accept or decline, lurid rumors about her begin to circulate, provoking Tali to make her own outrageous suggestion to the man who’s offered her respectability at his side.

Lozen (c. 1840-1890) was a skilled warrior, sister of Victorio a prominent war chief of the Chihenne Chiricahua Apache, and a prophet. Born into the Chihenne band during the late 1840s, Lozen was, according to legends, able to use her powers in battle to learn the movements of the enemy. According to Alexander B.
Blurb:

Two pack masters discover an unyielding love in one woman by altering customs and forming new traditions destined to change the Wyoming Territory forever. Imprinting upon and sharing a lover, the Alphas realize their packs must join together, but they will face great opposition when their chosen mate is confronted with a wrenching decision.

Pack masters Frank Smith and Jock Corrigan aren’t enemies, but they aren’t exactly friends. Still, their similar fates have been altered by an unusual union they cannot deny. Their relationship with Carla Cassidy forces several wolves to make their independent choices. One will stand with the newly formed pack, but another will fall victim to his own selfish needs and motives. A group of new shifters will emerge and change the course of history, but not before the expanding pack’s goals are tested and tried.

 STORY EXCERPT

“What are you doing here?” Carla asked, propping her tiny clenched fists on her hips.

“Far be it for you to show a little appreciation,” Jock said, studying the spitfire of a woman before them. Wearing a light blue prairie dress, Carla apparently hadn’t stopped to check out the torn fabric and soiled material.

“You were attacked by a pack of wolves. I arrived in time to run them off.” Jock stood a tad taller with his announcement. Most women appreciated heroic efforts.

She paled then as he spoke. She looked down at the evidence of a ruined dress and her hands twitched.

“How did this happen?” Carla asked, suggesting her memory had failed her.

“You must’ve had a nasty bump on the head if you don’t remember,” Grant told her.

She held the heel of her hand to her forehead. “Everything is a bit foggy.”

“Well, don’t you fret none, Carla. We took care of ya.” Grant shot Jock a quick glance. “Yep, siree. Me and Jock here handled everything.”

Jock was beginning to think whenever there was a “yep, siree,” added to Grant’s speech it was nothing more than a bald-faced tale.

“Do you remember going to the barn?” Jock asked.

Carla took a minute before she answered. As if she suddenly recalled something of interest, her cheeks turned pink and she said, “I may have already been in the barn.”

Grant shot her a wink and a lopsided nod. “That was my best estimation, too.”

“Dear God,” Jock grumbled, beginning to believe Grant must’ve considered himself the most intelligent man in the West.

“Here’s how I figure things went down. Those wolves heard a lot of activity, maybe even some squealin’ and carryin’ on comin’ from the barn…” He paused and arched a brow. “How am I doin’ so far?”

Carla stared at him with this perplexed look which made Jock wonder all the more. Had Grant really watched Carla in action with these wicked props he’d mentioned?

“That’s all right, sweetness. Don’t worry ’bout a reply. I can make heads and tails out of this. Anyhow, you were in the barn doin’ whatever it is that you do out there—in the loft—and well, what I came up with after a-prowlin’ around is that you were makin’ a little too much noise.” He stood taller and his lips spread into a mischievous smile. Leaning against Jock, he added a whisper, “How’d I do? Did ya like that?”

Jock studied the pretty lady. “Carla? How close was Grant’s guess?”

“What sort of squealing?” Carla arched a brow and watched them through suspicious eyes.

Grant shrugged. “That voice of yours is as fine as cream gravy when you go to hollerin’ and such.”

“Grant,” Jock muttered, giving his buddy a one-word warning he would inevitably ignore.

Copping a strut, Grant approached the porch, working what little swagger he possessed. “Come on, Carla. You know what I mean. You can’t kick up a row and expect no one to hear ya. I ain’t been a man for all these years for nothin’. I can spot an experienced woman.” He cupped his ear, slung his arm off to the left, and quickly added, “And I can hear one from way over yonder.”

Before Jock had a chance to smooth things over, a disgusted gasp fell from Carla’s mouth. “Well I’ve never in my life.”

“Me neither,” Grant admitted. “But after what I’ve witnessed, I’d be the first man to say you are a soiled dove to the manner born. And I’d be the first to mention yer geared up to teach even an experienced fella a thing or two.”

Carla’s eyes filled with tears. Before Jock saw the slap coming, she opened her hand and her palm connected with Grant’s cheek.

“I don’t know who you think you are, Grant Ford, but if you’re trying to make a mash on me, I can promise you, I’m not impressed!”

Grant stared back at her with wide eyes. “Surely to God you ain’t offended.”

“I am indeed!”

And of course after that, Miss Carla Cassidy did what Jock suspected she might. She walked inside, slammed the door in their faces, and never so much as bothered to say good-bye.

“Happy now?” Jock asked, without blinking an eye.

“I like ’em a little hot under the collar. Trust me, friend. I know what I’m doin’. Let’s go for a run. When we get back, she’ll be fit to be tied—and I mean that in the literal sense.”

Jock couldn’t help but think about Grant’s earlier words. One of these days, Carla would open the door and greet her husband. Considering what had transpired, Jock had a feeling she’d slam that door just as quickly if she thought her potential suitor was named Grant Ford.

Welcome to the Rites of Spring Blog Hop. Since spring is about the first scent of flowers in the air, the first blooms on the trees, the first sighting of robins and… okay, you get it. Authors participating in the hop, are sharing a first for one of their characters. My scene comes from River’s Edge–my first indy (independently published book). Scene I’m sharing: First “full frontal view” River Prescott has of Edge Grayson’s assets.

Grasping her pencil, River leaned forward, almost falling from her hiding spot as she prepared to draw her first live nude subject. She had studied Hellenic art, copying pictures of naked gods and men. Hermes of Atalante, the Roman statue by Lysippus, remained her favorite. But the sun-kissed figure below eclipsed the one-dimensional depictions in her books.

Standing thigh deep with his back turned toward her and his shoulder muscles rippling, the cowboy reached low, scooping water to wet his face and chest. The fiery red color of his shoulders and back contrasted with the pale skin on his rump and thighs. He bent to cup water and rinsed white soap from the dark tufts of hair sprouting from his armpits.

River stared at the taut muscles in his buttocks, a jagged scar ruining the contour of the left cheek. And then he turned around, displaying a form more magnificent than any pictures of sculpted perfections she’d studied. Her gaze roved across his body, greedily examining and cataloguing the earthy reality.

He rubbed soap over his chest, swirling white lather around his nubs, pausing to squeeze the tips between finger and thumb. Rough laughter escaped him as his manhood bobbled in response.

River’s left hand lifted of its own accord, cupping the material covering her bosom. Though only plump in wishful dreams, her breasts each sported a dusty areola, darkly ringing a sensitive tip. She imagined him caressing her flesh, pinching her nipples as he had his own and a surge of need clawed at her belly.

She bit her bottom lip, concentrating as she detailed the heavy shoulder muscles, the sprinkling of dark chest hair, and the sharp hipbones framing the flat belly. Not even his navel escaped her feathered strokes that mimicked the fine hairs that circled it before arrowing toward his groin.

As she watched, sunrays highlighted a line of water that trickled down from shoulder to chest and rolled over his flat stomach. Glistening drops collected in the dark thatch surrounding his manhood. His penis appeared more robust than the hairless groins of the marble statues she’d studied in her books.

River swallowed, trying to quell her breathless fascination with his maleness. As though her scrutiny had caused the action, he fisted his hand around his shaft and stoked the flesh between his legs until it became engorged.

She wasn’t prepared and the erotic motion caught her unawares. The pencil she gripped snapped into two parts as a flood of heat scalded her insides. She stifled a moan and forced her gaze away from the intimate act and back to the harsh planes of his face.

Almost casually, he rinsed, walked out of the water to his pile of clothes, picked up his gun, and pointed it at the approximate place where she crouched in the tree.

“Come down from there now or I’ll start shooting.” His tone bore little resemblance to that of the easy-going cowboy she’d spied on all morning.

“Please go away,” she called to him, hastily cramming her sketchbook into her satchel. She had every reason to believe this stern-voiced stranger might actually carry out his threat. The sound of her voice identifying her gender seemed to jar him a bit.

He lowered the gun, pulling on his trousers and stepping into his boots before walking beneath the willow.

“You coming down?” he growled.

“No,” she answered, estimating the distance to the ground from the limb where she perched. She might have to jump and run. Cloaked behind a screen of leaves, she couldn’t see his actions or anticipate his intentions.

“Guess I’ll have to come up to meet you, then.” The tree swayed under his weight as he began to climb.

As Naomi peered up at him, Charlie supported his weight, blanketing her with his body. A few pulls and he removed his vest and then his pants, baring his flesh to press against hers. She gasped, her husky sound of desire turning his gray eyes to dark smoke.

Holding her gaze, he hovered above her as if waiting for her to protest. When instead, she traced the scar on his face before running her fingers through his hair, his stern expression softened and he fit his knee between her thighs, pressing her open.

Naomi closed her eyes, savoring the feel of his muscled leg. He nudged and she willingly spread her thighs wider until his hot flesh rubbed against her folds. Arousal made her spine arch and her breasts thrust upward, the heat in her core becoming an inferno demanding satisfaction.

Blurb:

Charlie Wolf is half Kiowa, all bounty hunter and a no-nonsense man—until he meets a schoolteacher with cornflower-blue eyes. After marauding outlaws attack Naomi’s school and kidnap her students, she’s desperate and will do anything to rescue them, even seduce the best tracker in Texas to secure his help.

Naomi offers one night of sexual favors, underestimating the power of Charlie’s predatory charm and his determination to claim her as his mate. She’s impatient with his decisions, questions his authority and generally ignores his warnings. But she melts in Charlie’s arms when he makes love to her.

Blood is spilled, past murder avenged, desperadoes captured and lust assuaged as the two set out to rescue Naomi’s young ladies.

I couldn’t decide what to post and so at the last moment used another snippet from River’s Edge, my title that came out last week.

“Did your mother have a special reason for naming you Edge?”

“Being able to draw a weapon fast and shoot straight gave me an edge in a gunfight and the name stuck.”

“You don’t like your name?”

“I guess it beats nothing,” he agreed gruffly.

“Well, I for one, think it fits. Your body is honed to perfection—as sharp and flawless as the edge of a steel blade.” River stopped her enthusiastic description, realizing she’d perhaps said too much.

Edge held the last roll before his open mouth, the motion of his hand suspended, his head tipped sideways as he stared at her.

Blurb:

River Prescott has everything she’s ever wanted–except perhaps a man. The unconventional ranch owning artist is very certain she doesn’t want a husband. But sometimes she can’t help wishing for a lover; especially after her new neighbor trespasses and she gets a full frontal view of his assets.

Edge Grayson moves onto the rundown spread he’s inherited, expecting to stay aloof from nearby town business. But between local artist, River Prescott’s determination to seduce him and protecting her from a killer on the prowl, the ex-gunslinger is finding respectability a lot more dangerous than his former life of sin.

Miss Prescott leaned over his shoulder, staring where Edge pointed. Yep, she wore the scent of lilac flowers. Now he knew for certain it had been her perfume he’d smelled the first day. He wasn’t sure she should be leaning that close since her aroma acted like fingers, massaging his groin.

Instead of backing off, Miss Prescott squatted next to him, her narrow skirt molding to her hips and her thigh molding to his leg.

Jesus. No, no, no… Edge tensed as his cock twitched. His hand slipped off the pedal, the force of the thrust sending the back wheel spinning.

“Have you eaten?”

Remi shook her head.

“You lock up tight?” Church asked, setting a bowl of chili in front of her. She didn’t take care of herself and he assumed, as usual, other than the mug of coffee she’d carried out with her this morning, she’d not eaten a damned thing all day.

“Chili’s good,” she said around a mouthful.

He shoved a knife, a stack of single wrapped crackers, and a can of peanut butter from under the bar at her. He’d fed her often enough to know she was hell on wheels with the stuff.

Posting a scene from a new wip. I haven’t written enough to commit yet, so no title until the story makes me fall in or out of love with it.

Church watched Remi shake herself like a dog, flinging drops of water on anyone unlucky enough to be close. The men forgave her when she pulled her drenched sweatshirt over her head, revealing the soaked blouse underneath plastered to her breasts.

Her gaze skated over the crowded room, settling on Church, standing behind the bar. She flashed him a grin when he motioned her over to a stool in the corner and handed her a towel. She used it to wipe off her totebag instead of herself, so he slung a shirt around her shoulders.

“Church, I’m fine.”

“I could put my mouth on ‘em and warm ‘em up that way, sugar,” he growled, leering at her rigid nipples revealed under the almost transparent material.

“You guys are such pervs,” she muttered, but she slid into his shirt, buttoning herself into his arms.

Hi everyone! It’s Wednesday and time for a sexy snippet to get us to the end of the week! Today, I’m sharing last scene from River’s Edge, my title coming out this month.

Genre: m/f erotic, historical romance

Setting: End of era-The Old West

Today’s Snippet Rating: PG

“So what do you want me to do and where do you want me to do it?” Edge couldn’t keep a hint of surliness from his tone, unexpectedly angry at the embarrassment he couldn’t disguise.

“After you’ve removed your clothes, please stand in the pool of sunlight slanting through the window. Then stroke yourself as you did by the river.” Her superior tone announced she was unimpressed with his cock, other than of course, for purposes of art.

Edge started to refuse, then paused. He’d looked through the stack of canvasses when he’d bundled them for shipment. She painted pictures of deer and rabbits, and a cowboy or two–none of them naked.

“Exactly who’s going to be looking at this picture?”

A hint of red touched her cheeks and it took her a moment before she finally answered, ”Me.”

Hello Weekend Writing Warriors. Happy Super Bowl Day to you! I’m so glad industrious authors have pledged to continue our weekly blog hop. Thank you! My snippet today is from my coming soon title, River’s Edge.

Before she could forget the tiniest detail, River set to work with sketchpad and pencil.

The night was half gone when she finished and stepped back, wiping charcoal smudges from her hands as she examined the likeness.

Before she tucked the sketch away, where no eyes but her own would ever see it, she admired the scandalous, totally indecent picture.

“It’s a shame I can’t display this.”

A low, slow heat fluttered in her belly as she studied her drawing of Edge Grayson.

Remembering his hand pumping up and down on his engorged shaft, River’s lips parted, her eyes drifted half-shut and her groan had nothing to do with art.
